Chapter Fifteen

Zachary

Today’s appointment is necessary, but I’m dreading it. I step out of the shower and catch Scarlett’s silhouette through the ajar door. Waking up beside her has become a life goal. The trick is going to be how to balance my life and caring for my mother.

“I feel you staring,” she says as she tugs on her leggings.

I push the door open more. “You’re gorgeous and mine. I have permission, don’t I?”

She saunters closer, and I tug her against me. “You do, but we need to choose our timing better.”

“I know. I don’t like it, but I know. What time are you done with class today?” I press a kiss to her lips and reluctantly release her.

“I should be home by noon. What time is Carol’s appointment?”

“Ten. Can I stop by when we’re done?”

She pauses fixing her shirt. “You’re always welcome.” We finish dressing and are enjoying our coffee when Gladys arrives for work.

“Morning, lovebirds.”

I’m still not sure why she uses the term when Mom can’t hear her. Yes, we’re dating, but…. “Morning.”

Scarlett runs down Mom’s night for Gladys and puts her mug in the dishwasher before grabbing a water and a muffin. “I gotta go. Text me when you’re finished.”

“I will.”

She presses a light kiss to my lips and bounds toward the front door.

“You two are perfect together,” Gladys states.

She isn’t wrong. “Maybe.”

Luckily, I’m saved by Mom waking for the day to avoid continuing this conversation with Gladys. I know Scarlett is the one for me; I simply want to share my feelings with her first.

After dressing and breakfast for Mom, we take two cars to her appointment. Nadine pulls into a spot a few rows behind us about the same time.

“Morning, Mom,” she greets our mother first. “Gladys. Zack.”

“Sis.”

“Morning, Nadine,” Gladys replies.

Mom says nothing.

We make our way to the office and check in. We’re only in the waiting room for a few minutes before they take Mom back for new scans. She requested Gladys accompany her for the scans instead of Nadine this time. Nadine obliged.

“How was she last night?”

“Same as since we last talked. Her episodes are increasing in frequency—day and night. None have been major though.”

“Do you think our current plan is adequate?”

“Other than not getting enough sleep, Scarlett handles her episodes well. Mom heeds her.”

“I know we promised her, but what if her team thinks she needs to be moved to a facility?”

I drop my head in my hands. Despite the difficulty of having my mother in my home, I don’t want to renege on our agreement. “Let’s see what her doctors say after her scan.”

“Okay.”

“How are the kids? Any progress with Trevor?”

My sister frowns. “The kids are fine. They’ve adjusted to Trevor not acting like their father anymore.”

“Jackass.”

She shrugs. “He asked to come home. Apparently, things aren’t working out with Kellie.”

“How do you feel about that? Do you want him back?”

Nadine stews on my question for a bit longer than I expect.

“You don’t have to answer.”

“It isn’t that. I never thought I would be here.
